Ameline woke, reluctantly, to Ellyn running her fingers through her hair. She turned to squint in the morning light, displeased at being brought back to the waking world. Ellyn knelt by the bed, already dressed and prepared to face the day.

“Princess, we have to go,” she said softly. “People are waiting on us, and if we don’t turn up, they will come looking for us.”

With that, she stood and went to retrieve Ameline’s dress from where it had been discarded the night before. Ameline watched her walk away in silence, pulling the blanket up to cover her chest. She tried to understand what it meant that Ellyn was calling her by her title again, but all of the answers she could imagine only depressed her. When Ellyn returned with her clothing, it was almost easy to fall into routine. Ellyn was nothing if not efficient, and in her capable hands Ameline was soon dressed and as decent as could be expected, given the circumstances.

“The way back to the inn should be easy if we actually take the path,” Ellyn said. She had been unusually talkative all morning as if trying to fill the silence that Ameline had not yet broken. “I would like to look at your ankle again before we go, princess, to make sure you are up for it.”

Ameline sat as directed on the only chair and offered her foot. She stared at Ellyn’s face as she examined her ankle and couldn’t take it anymore.

“Are you really going to pretend last night didn’t happen?”

Ellyn flinched. “Princess, please-”

“Stop calling me that!” Ameline shouted.

“But it is what you are, and what I am not,” Ellyn said, not meeting Ameline’s anger, instead seeming resigned. “We cannot change that, no more than we can change the past.”

“Do you want to change the past? Do you wish last night had never happened?” Ameline felt her heart breaking.

“No, please. That is not what I meant.” Ellyn placed her hand on Ameline’s cheek. “You must believe me, I cannot bring myself to regret last night.”

“Then what did you mean? You certainly act as if it was wrong.”

Ellyn stood and paced about the room, her frustration finally taking hold. “Can you not understand? I am just a commoner, what future could I give you?”

“Is that what you are concerned about?” Ameline demanded, incredulous. “My future will be whatever I chose, to be spent with whomever I chose!”

“Do you really think your parents would agree to that?”

“They explicitly told me so! Why do you think I was not married off as soon as I came of age? I don’t even need to bear them heirs! They said that since they could not give me the titles or land that they had given my older siblings, that I was free to marry as I wished, no matter their station, as long as it was for love.”

Ellyn stared, dumbstruck. Ameline, unable to tolerate the distance between them anymore, stood and stumbled towards her knight. Ellyn met her halfway, catching the princess up in her arms.
